Winter Fruit Salad

According to research from Calorie Control Council, the average American easily consumes more than 2,000 calories and 81 grams of fat (much of it being saturated fat) from a typical Super Bowl Sunday menu. Trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle while tailgating or at a viewing party can be a challenge. That’s why I often balance out my Super Bowl dishes with healthy and wholesome snacks. If you’re getting ready for this week’s game, my suggestion is a winter fruit salad.

This salad is a real crowd-pleaser, from babies to adults and everyone in between, and a welcome sweet and tart addition to the heavier fare that’s served on game day. I include all of the season’s bounty, including kiwi, oranges, red grapes and a sprinkling of pomegranate arils. You can get creative with red and green grapes, green or golden kiwi, and a variety of citrus like Cara Cara oranges, blood oranges and pummelos, depending on what your local grocer carries. To make the presentation really eye-catching, arrange the fruit on a wooden cutting board. This colorful salad provides fiber, potassium, vitamin C and other immune-boosting nutrients.

What you’ll need for an average-sized gathering: four oranges, four kiwi, one bag of grapes and one pomegranate. Persimmon is another one of my favorite winter fruits, especially if you have want to impress your guests with a fruity fun fact.

Disclosure: I work with Sunkist citrus. I was not compensated to include citrus in this post. But I sure do love winter fruit salad!
