What a Nutritionist Eats at a Football Stadium, VIP-Style

Cardinals University of Phoenix StadiumAutumn. The time of year that brings falling leaves, chilly evenings, and my husband’s favorite time of year – football season. While I consider myself a Packer (sans cheese head hat) and Badger fan, I couldn’t tell you the name of one single player on either team. I might recognize a name, though. What I love most about the sport is the camaraderie among spectators, and most importantly, the game day food. Recently my sister invited me to tag along at a Cardinals’ home game in her friend’s skybox on the loft level. Yes, it’s nice to have a sister who travels in this kind of social circle. Of course I agreed to go.

Cardinals cheerleadersOne of my favorite things about VIP tickets is not having to wait in line. Even better, a loft level ticket includes a personal greeting from two cute Cardinals cheerleaders. This day they donned pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Popcorn in Cardinals stadium sky boxA huge bucket of popcorn awaited us, plus scary red tortilla chips and three kinds of salsa. I skipped the popcorn because it was cold and not as good as that served hot at my gym’s movie theater for kids. I plunged into the chips and salsa immediately, one of my favorite snacks, though I could do without the artificial food coloring. But I get it. Red. Yay. I portioned out an appetizer plate.

Wet bar In Cardinal stadium loftThe bloody Mary’s and tequila on the rocks were flowing. This Zing Zang bloody Mary mix was the best one I’ve ever tasted. A party in a bottle, of which I sipped one glass.

Vegetable tray at Cardinal stadium skyboxFirst came the veggie tray, filled with a vibrant assortment of fresh vegetables and ranch dressing. I nibbled on a couple of zucchini slices.

Mac and cheese and barbecued ribs at University of Phoenix stadium loftThen a team of servers brought in the hot food. First came macaroni and cheese and miniature mastodon-size ribs.

Buffalo wings at University of Phoenix stadium loftFootball and chicken wings are like peanut butter and jelly. Here they prepared them with three different sauces. I portioned out a dinner plate with a small scoop of mac and cheese, two ribs, two Buffalo wings with a modest puddle of blue cheese dip, and a few pieces of vegetables.

Mini hotdogLater in the game, I selected a mini hot dog and squirted on mustard and ketchup.

Ice cream brownie sundae at Cardinals stadium skyboxThe piece de resistance. A 3-foot tall stainless steel martini glass filled with nearly 10 scoops of ice cream including vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.

Ice cream sundae toppings at Cardinals stadium skyboxThey didn’t forget to include every topping known to man. After my sister dished a scoop for me (I secretly wanted more), I topped it with chocolate cookies, jimmies, gummy bears (I don’t recommend it – too cold), peanuts, and toffee.  Sadly people picked off all of the brownies on top, but then, wait! At the very end, I noticed that they also lined the bottom of the dish. I chose two pieces.

Lauren and I at Cardinals stadiumMy sister is my buddy and we love sharing good food experiences. She is a good home cook and “gets it”. I can’t wait until our next extravaganza on Thanksgiving!

What a Nutritionist Eats at a Candy Buffet

Candy display at friend's adoption party

It’s every kid’s dream. To “get candy,” as Jerry Seinfeld explains.

Last weekend I attended my friend’s adoption party. It was quite a production, to say the least, and for good reason. Alysa and her husband had tried to adopt a baby for nearly two years to no avail. Then just days before their adoption papers were to expire, they received the call. A beautiful two-year-old baby girl who lived in the same city was waiting for a new family to adopt her.

So there we were. Alysa spared no expense and… More...

Nutrition Expert on Food and Nutrition Trends at the ADA Convention

KIND Healthy Grains

It’s interesting to reflect on how my approach to an expo hall has evolved. As a college student, I felt compelled to visit each and every vendor, which left me feeling nauseous and ready for a nap. These days I plan my time well beforehand and set a budget for my stomach space. If a company listed in the guide excites me, I circle it on the map and seek it out the next day. I practiced this exercise recently at the American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo. Here are the highlights.

Health Food Writer Tours California Avocado Grove (and Giveaway!)

Avocados on the branch

September tends to be one of the busiest months of my year, filled with food writer and registered dietitian conferences on top of my duties as a nutrition spokesperson. For the past few days I’ve been in San Diego at the American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, as both nutrition speaker and attendee.

Before I checked into my room a bus whisked me away to tour an avocado grove, a media nutritionist event hosted by California Avocados. I keep these tasty fruits on hand like other people do bananas, so I was thrilled to receive an invite.

Nutrition Writer Attends Mixology Demo at Mabel’s on Main

Mixologist Clintat Mabel’s on Main

Since my message as a nutrition writer, media nutritionist, and recipe developer reaches a large audience, you might think I was constantly surrounded by people. On the contrary, I work independently planning and preparing in my office the majority of time. This is the main reason I make sure to take time out to participate in the networking events of the professional organizations of which I’m a member.

One of these organizations is Les Dames d’Escoffier, an invitational group of women leaders in the food and beverage industry. I am a member of the Phoenix chapter, and attend local meetings… More...

Media Nutritionist Attends The Symposium for Professional Food Writers

The view from Howard Creek Lodge at The Greenbrier overlooking the mountains

I love that I love what I do.

As I contemplated what to pack for The Symposium for Professional Food Writers, I read in the program that jeans were acceptable. “Jeans?” I exclaimed out loud. Wearing jeans to a business function makes me a little nervous. I think it’s the dietitian in me. My husband’s reaction was “You guys just sit around on couches talking about writing, don’t you?” I retorted a little defensively, “Actually, we take notes in a conference room setting while listening to expert speakers. At night, though, I suppose we do sit around sipping wine… More...

Healthy Food Shopping Haul at Sprouts

Sprouts Farmers Market

Over Labor Day weekend I took full advantage of Steve keeping Scarlet while I went to my workout and shopped afterwards. I splurged and drove the extra 15 minutes to Sprouts Farmers Market, a grocery store with locations sprinkled throughout California, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas. I laughed walking in reminiscing about Morgan Splurlock (of The Greatest Movie Ever Made) calling Trader Joe’s the Whole Foods for poor people. I’d say the same about this place, though “for poor people” being a bit of an exaggeration. Sprouts offers wholesome brands you won’t find at traditional stores,… More...
