Nutrition Blogger’s Blue Skies Ahead: Life After the Blog-Off

Most of you already know the story. For the past 4 weeks, I competed in a blog-off for SELF in the hopes of becoming their next Eat Like Me blogger. Four nutritionists, including myself, blogged to strut our stuff and display to the world everything we ate. The reader feedback I received was really favorable. I figured I had a pretty good shot. But Sarah-Jane won (congrats) with the most number of reader votes. It is what it is.

I found out the news 30 minutes before presenting a webinar to over 750 people, while chasing after my daughter to get her ready for the babysitter, and throwing clothes into my suitcase before a fun weekend getaway. I didn’t have time to be sad. Of course I was disappointed – this was something I really wanted. It just didn’t happen.

A couple hours later, on the way to the airport, my brain started to churn. How could I take this valuable experience and turn it into something even more fabulous? I decided to start blogging on my own website much more frequently and deliver what my readers were asking for. Your comments and suggestions have been rolling in, and I’m taking note. You loved my honesty. The good. The bad. The ugly. Since many of you are ELM fans, too, I’m trying to determine how to take what I enjoyed about that blog and shape it into something new. This is what I’m thinking:

1. Continue to post photos of all of my meals on my Facebook page. I know some of you might not get a chance to read the blog everyday, but still love getting new ideas from my quick snapshots.

2. Mondays, I’ll post a weekend wrap-up on the blog. This is where some of my most real and honest moments will be revealed when I step away from my healthy kitchen bubble.

3. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, I’ll post once daily, showing everything I ate the day before, including meals and snacks. This will be really telling I think, with nowhere for me to hide. In a good way. For you, at least.

4. On occasion, I will pop in a special Saturday bonus report on a topic you’ve been asking about, or one that I fancy.

Then throughout all of these posts, I’ll scatter in bargain and eco-friendly tips as they come. I’ll also let you know which of these foods Scarlet eats with me, so that those of you with children may be inspired to serve these to your cutie pies, as well. Please let me know your thoughts on all of this, either here or on Facebook.

To make things interesting, I have a cute and very nice Trudeau travel mug I’ll give away to one lucky, random winner who comments. Let’s makes this the best blog ever!

Disclosure: The mug is from a friend of mine who works for Trudeau.

I am an RD in Louisville, KY and also Anita Miller’s step mom. I love everything you write and your pictures. I teach cooking and nutrition to young pregnant women and I am always looking for new ideas. I love that you live in “the real world” of food and eating. Sorry about the Self project. I voted for you often but I like your new ideas a lot. Who knows maybe bigger doors will open.

Hi Linda! Nice to hear from you! Thanks for your support and it makes my day to hear that my info is helpful to you and your practice. Yeah, I figure I’ll keep up with the blogging here with you all and good things will happen.
      Keep in touch.

Hello, I am devoted eat like me blog reader and I was so disappointed to see that you did not win the eat like me blogger competition. However, I am more than thrilled that you will be starting your own blog! I am looking forward to reading your new ideas and food advice!

Aw, thanks Jul. Thanks for “following” me to my own blog. Glad to have you!

Michelle… hats off to you for the wonderful job you did! I know for me, some doors closing & some changing colors & some changing houses & some just disappearing all together really prompted me to embrace my own blog space and begin giving it the attention it deserved this last year. The nice thing about NOT being the ELM blogger for anyone else is you can always be true to yourself, your readers and deliver your expertise the way you want to present it. Best of luck!! I will enjoy tuning in.

Thank you, Regan, for your insight. Yes, I’ve definitely thought of a handful of upsides to blogging in my own space:) Congrats to you, too, on your success!

Absolutely love where your headed and I look forward to taking the ride with you! I’m very excited that you will continue posting on facebook and blogging more! I will be checking both!! I’d love it if you would add recipes or some sort of shopping list once a week for things like seasonings to punch up a meal, alternatives to sugar, and icky ol’ soda ( I love COKE ) types of teas, snacks. Ugh, as you can see I need suggestions. LOL

Hi Cali! Thank you for the kind words. I love your ideas. I could put the recipes as the bonus articles. Shopping list…love that too. Maybe at the beginning of each month I could show a grocery list based on foods in season. I added your ideas to my list. Thank you!

I was so disapointed to hear you were not selected as the Self blogger. I think your posts, food philosophy and overall nutrition principles are fantastic and I would love to see more of that on this blog! Keep up the amazing work!

I liked your blogging at Self, voted several times and am sorry you didn’t win. What caught my attention was you were a busy mom, traveled a lot and still didn’t eat the same thing every day. I liked that you weren’t perfect in everything you ate and I liked that you shared how to make your meals. I look forward to reading your blog and seeing how it develops!

I thoroughly enjoyed all your posts on the Eat Like Me blog as well as the Facebook snapshots when you weren’t posting on ELM. I love that you really focus on food that is flavorful as well as healthy. My husband often thinks that “healthy food” can’t taste good too, so it’s always great to have new inspiration for delicious, healthy meals! I’m so glad that you are continuing with your blogging and especially the Facebook posts. I found those to be a great quick bit of inspiration. Thanks again for all the effort you’re taking so we can still follow you outside of the ELM blog. Looking forward to it!!

Michelle – I was so disappointed that you didn’t with the ELM competition. I really enjoyed your style of writing and the quality of the food and nutrition data that you posted in the blog-off. I especially enjoyed the calorie info for your meals, as I am an avid calorie counter and I’m always looking for new recipes to try (but I don’t always have the patience to figure calories on my own for a new recipe). Please keep up the good work. I look forward to following you here from now on. Thanks for what you do!

Hi Michelle, I am an ELM reader and I am disappointed that you were not the Blog-off choice! I voted and voted but alas…Anyway, your blog direction sounds terrific. I appreciate the fact that you are a real life person who works, does chores, has a child and a husband and still manages to be active, healthy and fun. One thing I would appreciate is if you would post about your ethic food and vegetarian choices. NYC is my home away from home and as you know, it is THE food and restaurant capital of the world! I love all that it offers, from gourmet to cheap eats and would love to see if you too partake in Thai, Indian, Spanish, Mexican, Middle Eastern, etc. foods. In my mind, there is nothing better than a falafel from a little hole in the wall place in NYC! One thing that I was disappointed with ELM was the lack of ethnic food, too many American style dishes for me, as well as the lack of dessert. Who doesn’t want chocolate after a meal from time to time?!
Good luck with your new direction and I look forward to following your food and lifestyle choices!

      Hi J.M.,

I think you and I may have a lot in common! All of the ethnic cuisines that you mentioned, I absolutely love to eat. And as for the desserts missing from ELM…that is one more reason I decided to post everything I eat throughout the course for the day, because the in-between-times are when I tend to fit in my dessert or chocolate. As for vegetarian, when I dine out or cook only for myself and Scarlet (not my husband), is when you’ll see some vegetarian items pop up. I enjoy going meatless, but Steve doesn’t consider it a meal unless there is animal tissue involved:) And speaking of Spanish food, be sure to check out my Monday post about The Bizarre. Exciting things to come….

And thank you for your support.

Hi Michelle! I really enjoyed your posts on ELM and I was hoping you would be the new blogger. About 2 1/2 years ago Cristin (original ELM blogger) motivated me to eat healthy and exercise. In a matter of one year I had lost close to 40 pounds. I’m still maintaining my weightloss and looking for ways to be healthier every day. I look forward to your Facebook posts…keep it going :)
